A. Carol Gilligan (1936-present) proposed a moral theory of development specifically for females in reaction to Kohlberg's theory that used only male participants. It is a moral theory of caring, which she argues is more in line with female moral development of self in terms of caring and connection. Gilligan asserts that women were not inferior in their personal or moral development, but that they were different. They developed in a way that focused on connections among people (rather than separation) and with an ethic of care for those people (rather than an ethic of justice).
