First of all, as you focus on the methods in evaluating poetry from the 18th century, you might use some of these ideas. Of course it depends upon what you studied in the class. However, in terms of criteria for how poems are assessed, you might look at some traits such as their figurative language devices, poem's literal and connotative themes and appeal, the poem's reflections, messages/themes upon the political, social, and literary philosophies or beliefs of the era, and also how the poems demonstrate the poets' own lives, interests, ideas, etc.

Next, as you then examine the various factors within effective language usage in Donne's work, you might choose the poem, "The Sun Rising." As you explicate it, please note the use of imperative sentences. In other words, he uses a commanding or inviting approach to lure the reader with "Look, and tomorrow late, tell me whether both the Indias of spice and mine Be where thou leftst them, or lie here with me" to engage the sun, his lover, the reader, etc. You might also add that his language is quite personal, yet it also retains a formal tone with expressions indicative of the time such as "thou saw'st ...
