In my opinion, the story's main theme is "coming of age." It's a classic coming of age story in which the boy, wrapped up in his youthful hormones, comes to see the world for what it really is rather than for what he vainly imagines it to be. It's a sexuality story, a story about a boy who imagines more than lives. He lives in a dream world about girls and relationships. He doesn't know anything about Mangan's sister (except that she's pretty and he's coming into his sexuality), but he "loves" her.
