In the first place, as you brainstorm some possible ideas to guide you to formulate your own paper, I feel like character comparisons and contrasts might be a possible approach to follow and a solid starting point for discussion here.

For example, Vonnegut's characters, to me, exhibit some of the Cold War era mentalities in terms of their traits. Hazel, for example, wants the incompetent television announcer to get a raise, simply because he tried his best. George, Harrison's father, also seems frozen and void of emotion as he remarks, "Forget sad things." The characters' ignorance, mindlessness, and lack of true feelings seem to contrast with the highly emotional characters in "Sonny's Blues," I feel.

Again, Hazel's lack of reality seems to reflect satirically as she questions, "Who knows better'n I do what normal is?" The characters in Vonnegut's piece are abnormal to me; they are merely political and social symbols of failed ideologies. How do you see them?

In addition, as you then look at some character parallels within both texts, it seems like both Harrison and Sonny possess strong dreams and goals. However, Harrison's goals seem to be more ego-based, whereas Sonny's aspirations are more true, artistic, ...
