Dietary fat is a concentrated source of energy, and is important for growth and development. Byproducts of fat metabolism can act as hormones, affecting metabolic functions. It also provides several essential fatty acid, as well as fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. They also provide satiety in eating, giving flavor to food.

Body fat is an essential part of our nerves, spinal cord, brain and cell membranes. It pads the kidneys and other organs internally. Externally, fat provides a layer of protection from the cold. In women, fat can help nourish a baby.

Saturated fats contain a full quota of hydrogenated ions so that all of the carbon bonds are full. They are solid at room temperature. An example is butter. They are also found in high fat cheeses, high fat cuts of meet, whole fat milk and cream, ice cream, and palm and coconut oil. They are linked to chronic disease.
