Mary McLeod Bethune was a trailblazing African American woman who became one of the most prominent women of any color in American history. She is considered on par with figures such as Booker T. Washington within African American history because of her extraordinary impact on improving the livelihoods of African American women throughout her life and even in death. Her contributions to the empowerment of Black women are still continuing to reverberate in the 21st century as a university that bears her name still exists in the state of Florida where she began her extraordinary pursuit toward becoming one of the most consequential Black women in history.

She was one of "seventeen" children and her parents were former slaves, which makes her story even more powerful as she was the only sibling in her family to obtain an education because of the barbaric racism when she was born. To ensure that she would succeed in gaining her education, she walked five miles to school for years during her K-12 education as she understood from an early age the importance of education. After completing her formal education, she attended the Scotia Seminary, which was one of the only higher education institutions for African American women in the state of North Carolina.

Although her indoctrination in the Christian faith initially led her toward a pursuit of missionary service in Africa, after being rebuffed by white missionaries from the Presbyterian Mission Board to serve in Africa, she turned this rejection into a renewed purpose to help African Americans in the United States in general through education. She specifically wanted to uplift African American women. She began her educational journey as a teacher in South Carolina at her former school, which led to her eventually teaching at the Haines Normal and Industrial Institute in Augusta, Georgia.
