Why does a lack of reading fluency interfere with a student's ability to comprehend text?
Fluency means that reading is learned to the point it is fairly automatic and therefore doesn't require extensive working memory resources. Those resources can therefore be used to contemplate meaning, relate the ideas to existing knowledge, consider multiple points of view, and recall prior sentences to get larger themes of the reading instead of one work or one phrase at a time.
