I find that socio-economic status of parents and guardians may impact adversely on a child's achievement as much as cultural influences do. If the parents are immigrants and also part of the working poor classes. They may place more value on manual labor as a means of economic survival as much as anything else. Even if the immigrants were skilled labor in their home countries. Language may present such a barrier that the find themselves unable to find work in better paying skilled professions.
