You could categorize memory into three parts: Sensory, Short-Term and Long Term.

Sensory memory: 1) You could almost think of this as the Pavlov's dog experiment. People remember sensory items such as smell, taste, etc. in order to associate these senses with items or happenings.

Short-Term memory: 1) This type of memory is necessary to complete basic tasks. For example, if I ask "What is your name?", you must have short term memory to remember the question in the brief time it takes your brain to formulate the answer.

2) This type of memory has a small "storage" area.
3) This type of memory can be difficult for students with dyslexia, who could have a hard time physically reading and recalling. Also, students with ADHD might not pay proper attention (or may not be able to train one's attention) ...
