To assist in the validity of questions and ensure reliability with qualitative research researchers should do background research on the interviewee, use open-ended questions when collecting general information, use pointed questions for collecting facts, keep wording neutral, and leave room for a general question at the end of the interview.

Researchers should gather history of the person or group that is being interviewed to ascertain their experiences and assist in framing the right questions. Gathering information on where subjects have lived, worked, their personal interests, etc. can help the researcher predict answers that they may get from their research subjects.
