First off, please note that effective classroom management is definitely proactive, not reactive, and it is so teacher driven. Just like teachers emphasize the need for kids to practice skills in math, reading and writing, this section strongly advocates that effective teachers must also work diligently to train kids to practice and fully understand classroom rules.

As I explain how it is used in my classroom, I have the kids devise their own classroom rules in addition to mine early in the year, preferably the first week. When kids have a voice in determining the rules, they are more apt to follow them based on this sense of "buy in." ...
