Systems of education such as adult online learning are impacted by historical antecedents that develop and cultivate the nature of why and how adult learners learn the information and styles that they engage in. The entire concept of adult learning is derived from historical antecedents and five important characteristics of adult learning form the basis of the adult online learner.

The focus on adult learning ascertains the self-concept, prior experiences, perceived needs and other assumptions that form the aspects of the adult online learner as antecedents to adult online learning. In this framework, adult learners are considered to autonomous learners by nature and desire to improve themselves possessing intimate knowledge and drive of how they can learn and what trajectory of learning they wish to engage in. Included within this context of historical antecedents and adult learner is the belief that adult learners have individuality and all learn according to their own personal characteristics, aspirations, and well-developed learning processes that have been cultivated over a lifetime of learning. Adult learners have been establishing their own individual learning characteristics since their formative years in school and thus possess unique individual differences that should be accounted for by adult learning teachers to take advantage of the years of experience that these learners have cultivated over their academic lifespans. These individuals have the autonomy to escape the cultural and historical contexts of their learning to control and direct their learning developing their individual path and reaching an established potential that is determined by their own idiosyncratic viewpoint on learning. ...
