Spanking the Foster Child

Briefly explain why you selected the case study you identified.

I selected Case Study 26 only because I grew up with a lot of kids that where adopted. We would always get together growing up. What I notice is that foster kids would only tell you if they were adopted if they knew. This kids had a lot going on in their lives, let along being with a total Stanger who will be called there new family. I believe a foster kid is to admire only because it would take a lot for a little boy/girl to enter a new life. I really look up to this kids a lot for their choragus, self-depended and self motived on a new family. I also think as a foster parent, it is important to lovingly discipline your foster children to help them learn the appropriate ways to behave. Goals of discipline are to teach the child to evaluate his own behavior, and to adjust it accordingly. It is important not to show anger to your foster child or to treat him unfairly. Remember that you are teaching him lessons that he may not have learned with his birth family. Stay patient and loving, while consistently administering discipline.

Explain what you believe to be the ethical issue or issues involved in the situation. Keep in mind that you may have to make your own conclusions based on the information available.

The ethical part about this case study it is forbidden to hit any children for any reason. Charles and Jan were people with great respect but anyone can who is in the right mind can go wrong at any given moment. As he stated that he didn't know what he was doing, this could have been an l more serious case. Knowing and stating Charles did the right thing is totally not correct for throwing rocks. (Sharp, Aguirre, Kickham, 2011). These prescriptive statements associated with ethics, which primarily take the form of should or ought statements, are formed by values. Not just any values, however, but moral values. Boss (1998) notes, No moral values include good health; aesthetic values; social values, such as power, fame, and popularity; economic values; and political values, such as national integrity and solidarity. Only moral values carry the force of the ought.

Explain (using the ethical theories presented in the Introduction of your Managing in the Public Sector text), which ethical principles you would apply to the situation, and why.

I would have to say the ethical principle I chose is Autonomy is Latin for self-rule. Keeping in mind that by having obligation to respect the autonomy of other persons, which is to respect the decisions made by other people concerning their own lives. This is also called the principle of human dignity. It gives us a negative duty not to interfere with the decisions of competent adults, and a positive duty to empower others for whom we're responsible. Utilitarianism also differs from ethical theories that make the rightness or wrongness of an act dependent upon the motive of the agent; for, according to the Utilitarian, it is possible for the right thing to be done from a bad motive. (Sharp, Aguirre, Kickham, 2011) Remember ensuring that children who have been abused or neglected grow up in families and get the help they need to heal, build lasting family relationships and reach their full potential.

I selected Case Study 26, because I grew up with many kids who were adopted. We would always get together growing up. What I noticed is that foster kids would only tell you they were adopted if they actually knew. These kids had many issues they were dealing with in their lives such as being placed in the care of a total strangers who would be called their new family. I believe a foster kid is to be admired because it requires much strength for young children to enter a new life. I really look up to these kids a lot for their courage, independence, and self motivation regarding how they've adapted to their new family. I also think that foster parents should lovingly discipline their foster children to help them learn the appropriate ways to behave.
