I'm doing a complete presentation on the movie Dead Poets Society (1989). I have a series of questions to answer and need some help with one element:

Referencing humanities from the Renaissance to present, how does the movie demonstrate the importance of the humanities to a person's overall education?

This is for a PowerPoint presentation consisting of 20 slides. On this one question, I need to cover 3 slides. A foundation and some direction would be great.

Solution Summary

The solution looks at how humanities, from the Renaissance to the present contribute to one's overall education as presented in the 1989 movie Dead Poets Society by Peter Weir. The solution answers the need of a student to produce a powerpoint presentation, hence the solution was divided into appropriate sections to correspond to that. The first part discusses Humanism, romanticism & realism, delving on the work of John Keats & the ideas of Milton. The second part is a 'critique' of the movie - looking at the overlap of intellectual capacity & poetry, and how, through the words of a poet, people are stirred to see life in a more inspiring, more romantic & even ambitious light. One of Robert Herrick's work is featured. The Last & third part discusses the works of Kilmer, Whitman & Blake, and how through poetry, perspectives are achieved that changes the course of one's life. Presented in APA format.

Dear Student (Pamela),
Below is a suggested discussion for each of your 3 slides that discusses the topics you presented. They are rather long - it is not easy to put together a discussion on such a subject matter in 3 slides alone. You can expand it to more than 3 though and adapt it for the rest of your 20-slide presentation. There is a reference section below to indicate the resources used in this solution.

Title - Humanities in the Renaissance & the Realism of the 18th Century

Text -

"The genius of man... the unique and extraordinary ability of the human mind."
Gianozzo Manetti,On the Dignity and Excellence of Man (1396-1459)

The Renaissance was a period of active revival of what was seen as the perfection of the Greek & the Roman civilizations from governance to the sciences & the arts. Humanities emerged from the discipline of Humanism, the indelible mark of renaissance Europe that separated it from the Middle Ages. While the distinguished discipline of humanism was coined & identified in 1808 by German Academician FJ Niethammer, the practice of the principles of it - a discipline of studies that explore the human condition using critical, speculative & analytical methods outside of the realm of the natural & social sciences (where empiricism informs much of the methods) was adopted by renaissance thinkers as specific philosophy. To study the works from the past, humanist intellectuals like Niccolo Machiavelli, Thomas More & Erasmus would appraise them with a critical, reasoned and semi-empirical logic. Yet, in this manner of appraisal, they always displayed that sense of 'soul', an almost poetic way of describing a mode of reading where human emotions overpower rigid theological reasoning and even the blandness of exacting math. This philosophy in the end led to the appreciation of realism in the humanities & the arts, a far more critical view of the human condition. When one studies under the influence of humanism - poetry, grammar, ethics & rhetoric were the primary disciplines on offer.

"When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,?that is ...
