There are many factors which may account for developmental differences in children. These could include factors such as physical injuries, congenital problems, genetics, or socio-economic background.
A physical injury could cause a child to lose physical abilities in one part of the body. For example, a child might be involved in an automobile accident which causes her to lose some mobility in her legs. This child might require a walker or wheelchair, and she may need extra assistance in doing tasks that are easier for her peers. Another child might have congenital issues (often known as "birth defects") which are conditions that the child is born with.
