As a teacher for over 13 years, my high functioning autistic kids all demonstrated strong academic gains in literacy from being mainstreamed into regular education. Their gains were in Reading and Writing scores. I attribute the major climbs in their achievement on standardized tests to the fact that the regular education program has more depth, rigor, and quicker pacing than special education.
