As more and more children are being diagnosed with Autism, there is a growing need for special education classrooms. However, not all schools have the funding or space available to provide these extra classes. Because of this, autistic children are being placed in general education classrooms more frequently. This growing trend places several obstacles within the general education classroom. These obstacles include, but are not limited to: the impact on the teachers that teach both autistic and non-autistic children within one classroom, how the non-autistic children view the autistic students within their classroom and how teachers react to having autistic children in their general education classroom. It is important to address each obstacle individually when considering placing autistic children within the general education classroom as it may affect how teaching is conducted, what teaching tools are used and how much time may be needed on each subject. While it is imperative that autistic students get the proper education, is inclusion hurting or helping?
