    Solution Summary

Among the most important recent advances in thinking on international development is the idea that population health has a significant effect on economic performance. Although the effects of individuals' health status on their productivity and earnings have been the object of theoretical research and have been readily observable and acknowledged on the microeconomic level, the consequences of population health for economic performance (at the macro level) and for the well-being of individuals, families, and firms are more difficult to discern. There are several channels through which improvements in various measures of population health can contribute to economic growth via several channels: (1) Worker productivity; (2) Savings for Retirement; (3) Greater incentives for education; (4) Health improvements change demographic characteristics and age structure. These mechanisms are explored in greater detail in this paper.
