1. Data becomes usable information when data is placed in context or data is processed to get a final output. Data is the raw material that helps derive information that may be used for decision-making and taking action. Qualitative data if collected under experimental conditions and indicates a new qualitative dimension of a research topic becomes usable information. When data becomes usable it can be interpreted and becomes significant. From the perspective of a computer, data is input into the computer where it is processed and converted into useful information. For example, the daily temperature at a particular time is data, but a weather forecast is a useful information.
2. When persons or companies use data beyond the stated intention, there is data misuse. One situation in which data misuse occurs is when an organization collects data from a group of people for a specific purpose, then once more uses the data for another purpose. For example, data is collected to ascertain if the increase in technology leads to higher inequality. Then the same data is used for marketing. This is a misuse of data. Another type of misuse of data occurs when an individual with access to personal information abuses that power for his gain (a).
