What are the limitations? Disadvantages?
One of the main benefits of virtual worlds is that they are never passive. As students work their way through a simulation, they are interpreting and actively working. This is building knowledge as doing, and goes far beyond rote methods. The student, in other words, is totally engaged in the process as an active participant (Rich, 2008).
Using virtual environments can make ideas clearer in practice than they could ever be in theory. In fact, the virtual environment is only practice. This is especially useful for dangerous work such as nuclear maintenance, surgery or hornet grooming. The student could see how something is done long before they get near a hornet. Things like tattooing, with the proper pad and pen system, can be practiced before the student is ever near real skin. These type of jobs require hands on experience without it being literally "hands on." (Antonacci, 2008)
