BrainMass Environmental Issues

Describe water management and its effects on the environment.

Uses of water include agricultural, industrial, household, recreational and environmental activities. Fresh water is a renewable resource; however, the supply is steadily decreasing. Management of this resource is becoming a growing concern, as environmental toxins threaten our water supply. Desalination is an artificial process by which sea water is converted to fresh water. The most common desalination processes are distillation and reverse osmosis. Desalination is currently expensive compared to most alternative sources of water, and only a very small fraction of total human use is satisfied by desalination. Other methods of water management include using a surface water system to manage wetlands and protecting the ground water flow. The effects on the environment include sediment from storm water drainage and run-off or seepage from water sources that are contaminated with pesticides and other toxins that pollute water sources.

Identify potential impacts of environmental pollution to human and ecosystem health.

Environmental pollution refers to the contamination of air, water and land from man-made waste. Pollution leads to depletion of the ozone layer, global warming and climate change. Air pollution is the release of chemicals and particles into the atmosphere. Water pollution includes surface runoff, leakage into groundwater, liquid spills, wastewater discharge and littering.
