In your opinion, why has cinema surpassed theater in popularity? Defend your position using your favorite movie to explain the appeal of cinema over theater.

Cinema has more popularity than theater for several reasons. The most important reason in the last 50 years is that cinema has poured a huge amount of money into special effects. I like science fiction, horror and fantasy. These types of films have only gotten better in terms of special effects and technology. Also, the ease in being able to watch a film on the internet has only increased the popularity of film. I will choose all the Harry Potter films. In these films, the viewer gets to see the unbelievable, and it is made more believable through special effects that could not be achieved any other way. Flying in the sky would be a hard thing to arrange in theater, but Peter Pan is the only play I can imagine that had such special effects, and those were low tech. I enjoy the length of films, as if I choose my genre carefully, I will not look at my watch because I am transfixed by the magic of the magic. Films can make the unreal real. Theater, even when it is Avant Garde, still has the problems of being stuck in reality. Many people watching a film feel a sense of getting out of their heads. Plays primarily deal with the human condition as it is. The people in the play are just up there on the stage, but the thin veil of those humans being just like us up on that stage is a problem for today's end users of entertainment. Theater also requires the viewer to think about why these characters behave the way they do, or to be familiar with the text of the play. Theatre tickets are much more expensive than cinema tickets as well. The technologies of film and what they give us for so little money in relation to the expense of a professional sag play, that play cannot compete. Cinema doesn't let the viewer down. You need not know a thing about anything but what the viewer is shown. In the last 10 years, visually, cinema has become more exciting, more diverse and generally easily digestible.
