The importance of mHealth

Definition
mHealth is short for mobile health. It is a component of eHealth. mHealth is the use of cell phones and other wireless technology in medical. In a nutshell, it is a practice of providing health services via handheld devices. These services could range from simple mobile sensors to patient health monitoring systems and other medical applications on the mobile devices.

The formal definition of mHealth comes from the global survey report by world health organization (WHO) [1]. According to this report, the global observatory defined mHealth as, "medical and public health practice supported by mobile devices, such as mobile phones, patient monitoring devices, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and other wireless devices." Where [2] defines it as "the delivery of healthcare services via mobile communication devices."

Statistics
As per WHO, mHealth is going to play a vital role meeting future demands of health care services for the public. It is evident from the fact that many wearable fitness devices are in the market these days. The mHealth applications are also increasing with the growth of smartphones and latest gadgets.

More than half a billion (563 million) mobile devices and connections were added in 2015 according to CISCO [4], and there will be 11.6 billion mobile-connected devices by 2020. Only the smartphones will generate 4.4 gigabytes of traffic per month in next four years. It shows that a vast population of the world will be using smartphones and other communication devices for accessing information on the Internet and via mobile apps.

According to the survey conducted by Research2Guidance [3], There are currently 259,000 mHealth apps listed on the leading app stores. And there are 58,000 mHealth application publishers. The mHealth app downloads have also doubled in just last four years. According to the survey, 3.2 billion mHealth app downloads are expected in 2016. These statistics shows the size of the mHealth market and the growth potential.
