The Use of Mobile Health Devices in Healthcare (eHealth)

TERMS / DEFINITIONS

eHealth:

Wiki says eHealth, also termed, 'Medical Informatics' has several meanings that link to:

* Electronic health records
* ePrescribing
* Telemedicine
* Consumer health informatics
* Health knowledge management
* Virtual healthcare teams
* mHealth or m-Health

For a full picture of the term eHealth see the full article where, JMIR begins to say, "Lack of consensus on the meaning of eHealth has led to uncertainty among academics, policymakers, providers and consumers. This project was commissioned in light of the rising profile of eHealth on the international policy agenda..."

Another: "eHealth is the practice of medicine and public health provision supported by mobile communication devices. Most commonly, this involves the use of mobile phones, tablet computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs) for direct communication with health providers or accessing health-related information...acceptance and use of mobile eHealth services is still not widespread."

* Technology that exists presently and how it works

Pace.edu references the technology that exists presently - in multiple sectors - and how they work together to make up eHealth in total. Note how the definition above relates to a broad view of eHealth or mHealth, and includes a number of 'electronic' exchanges of data. EHealth is not just one thing, but is a broad system of an electronic industry. Note that the Barnes & Noble NOOK is for reading electronic books, and is not part of mobile devices in terms of Medical Informatics. Other systems, such as PDA's, phones, iPads, and tablets are used between patient and physician to transmit health records or monitoring data; another use is for a nurse or doctor in terms of receiving or transmitting medical information. Thus, the eHealth Systems Arcitecture includes, "the infrastructure that supports e-health thru several dimensions:

1. Internet: universal access to information and sites with or without predefined security authorizations;
2. Extranet: secure, remote connections between predefined participants. This might have included the e-commerce arena;
3. Intranet: support for a communications infrastructure within the enterprise, which may deliver access to internal and core data systems to all participants in the healthcare delivery process;
4. Core Data Systems: function-based systems which support the key processes of the enterprise. These may be financial, clinical or administrative systems at any of the partners in the e-health arena. Included in this group are systems such as the computerized patient record (CPR), PACS, admission and appointment systems, financial patient accounting systems as well as the internal infrastructure systems.
5. E-Mail: exchange of information between two or more partners using some combination of the internet/extranet/intranet. This may be considered to be an application using the architecture. However, it has become an essential reason for adoption of the e-health framework by caregivers and patients.
6. Telecommunications: the physical and technical layer that enables the connections and interchange of information through various media: wireless, fiber, cable, satellite, and other new and emerging means. Voice and email are interchangeable on some of the new devices. Recording, storing and transmitting this information falls within the boundaries of E-Health.
7. Hardware: computers, pagers, personal digital assistants (PDA's), PC tablets telephones, servers and other hardware provide the physical support for this infrastructure."
