Remote environment:

Some of the factors in the organization's remote environment include economic, social, political, econological and technological factors.

For Arkansas Best, these factors significantly affect its operations. Being a logistics service provider, the company's overall revenue and profitability significantly depends on the health of the economy. If the economy is in recession, the company's revenues would be affected. During the current recessionary period and credit crunch in the last few years, company's revenue has been negatively affected. Further, rising fuel prices also affects the profitability of the organization. Hence, the company has to keep a close eye on the developments of the economy. Its pricing, marketing and other strategies have to be modified as per the ongoing economic conditions.

Social factors such as lifestyle, beliefs, etc. do not have a direct impact on the company's operations, and do not affect the strategies in an indirect manner. For example, the changing lifestyle and beliefs would impact the product mix of companies which, in turn, would affect the composition of goods that the company transports from one location to another.

Political factors can affect the operations of the company. Changes in laws and regulations for the economy as a whole and logistics industry in general can affect the operations of the company. For example, laws pertaining to minimum wages and salaries can put pressure on company's operations. Other regulatory actions by government such as those related to insurance requirements, environmental laws for truck emissions can affect the company's profitability.
