Consumer demand is created by effective advertisement campaigns. That is the purpose of advertising: to inform consumers of new products, features of items or services, or otherwise encourage the consumer to become aware of a product/service and buy it. For instance, before Apple came out with the iPod and ran clever campaigns with edgy music did any of us realize we needed a music player for our pockets? Or perhaps your child has been struggling with math, and you recently heard a commercial from Math Masters about their tutoring program. In both cases the advertising industry is informing the consumer about a product that they may not have known they needed but that serves a purpose. The demand may not have been there prior to hearing or seeing the advertisement but it was developed (and acknowledged) as a result of the advertisement.

Those in favor of self-regulation in the advertising industry point out that self-regulation eliminates the need for marketers to go to court every time a company or consumer complains about an advertisement.
