Why should there be a detailed implementation/upgrade plan?
A detailed implementation plan is the company's best resource for change. The detailed implementation plan will have steps and stages that the business will use as a guide to follow. The first step will be the discussion process, followed by a step by step process for an agreed upon period of time, for instance 12 months. Once a timeline is set, the implementation plan can begin, as it has a start date and a completion date.
During the next 12 months, the company will discuss, review, analyze, meet with vendors, meet with affected staff members, review financing options (if applicable), make changes and revisions, and keep the project on course for implementation. During this time, the implementation team will meet in accordance with the plan. For all strategic plans, bi-weekly meetings tend to work best; there might not be updates weekly.
The bi-weekly meetings will advise the group if any setbacks, cost increases, material issues and any other issues related to the project. These meetings will allow all parties involved to correct any issue and change the course of the project if necessary. Communication is the most significant part of an implementation plan. Without communication, the plan will have only one path to follow; the path of poorly planned, over budget, improper usage and a missed deadline strategic plan.
"Simply put, strategic planning determines where an organization is going over the next year or more, how it's going to get there and how it'll know if it got there or not. The focus of a strategic plan is usually on the entire organization, while the focus of a business plan is usually on a particular product, service or program." (McNamara 2008)
