When we talk about project managers (PMs) having expert judgment in the subject matter of the project, we're dealing with what are commonly called subject matter experts (SMEs). When we analyze the entire skill set of PMs, there are several skills that are much more integral to the success of a project which are weighed in importance above SMEs. These would include skills like leadership ability, planning expertise, resource allocation skills, time management competency, communication skills, and several other areas that are critical for the PM. It is beneficial when a PM is an SME. There would be few people to argue the benefits that can be achieved when we have SME-PMs. However, when we analyze the requirements of a successful project, we can identify two specific foundations that the PM must possess, which are leadership skills and technical skills.
