Dominant Coalition

In organizations, factions where people align together due to shared interests usually dictate or have a sizable say in decision-making and outcomes. Factions are informal and unorganized but as is usually the case in political parties, factions, because of shared history, philosophies, perspectives, bond, professional & personal relationships and comradeship between allied members, are enduring and last longer than political terms. Factions build over time wherein 'an inner circle' of its oldest members is established and is usually difficult to penetrate for newcomers to the faction who will still have to prove themselves to the 'old establishment'. But factions work and membership in it is as much a political strategy as political conviction. Now coalitions is an alliance of independent politicians/individuals and factions/groups who set aside their differences to achieve a particular shared goal. Coalitions are interest-based and participation in a coalition is usually negotiated and is informal and temporary for the purpose of convenience. Formal coalitions are known as covenants wherein those who participate formally acknowledge each other, their expectancies and their roles. Now, in a political party there could be a few coalitions. Consider the last Presidential elections. Within the Democrat Party during the primaries the Clinton coalition seemed more dominant than the then Kennedy coalition (led by the late Senator Ted Kennedy) in that it had more supporting members within the party. But as time progressed and the nominations and the primaries began, Kennedy backed nominee then Senator Barack Obama emerged more popular his opponent Presidential bid hopeful then Senator Hillary Clinton.
