Sometimes, I hear but I don't listen. Listening requires me to pay attention, not just to the words, but also to the tone of the voice, the inflections of the words, flow of the language, as well as body language. Listening requires me to analyze the meanings behind the words, and connect the dots, not just hear the individual words themselves. One act that would help me to improve my active listening skills is to stop talking, and to stop thinking about what I will say next. That way, I can better listen to what the other person is saying.
