Descriptive research gets information relating to the present status of the phenomena. It points out what exists. So it describes conditions, variables, and situations. Descriptive methods include the study of changes over a period o time, explanation of relationships between variables, and survey results.

You carry out explanatory research to explain a human behavior. In the context of policy research this means using research methods of questionnaires, interviews, sampling methods for picking up respondents, and group discussion.
