Quintessentially speaking, coffee as a commodity is the difference between life and death in many countries, it is second only to oil in regard to its importance within the global economy as it is the second most traded commodity across the globe. In some countries such as Ethiopia, the entire economy of the country and communities within the country is predicated upon coffee, which is the only profitable commodity that is cultivated and sold by farmers throughout the country. This global product has maintained dominance throughout the world as a global commodity for hundreds of years, and it is responsible for employing millions of people around the world as their only form of supplemental income.
Therefore, it is not an understatement to state that coffee encapsulates entire economies for countries across the world with millions of people relying upon the growth, processing, and trade of coffee to eek out meager existences, and when the price of coffee falls, this results in significant and potentially destructive consequences for countries and people living within these countries that are dependent upon coffee as their most profitable crop.
