There are unique staffing, training, and motivational challenges that may be encountered within a typical production operation. A job shop operation creates flexibility to produce a variety of products but the staff must have knowledge of a range of products, it must have training to produce a range of products, and should be rewarded for producing each different type of product. Continuous flow has entirely different types of challenges. The employees must have expert knowledge in a narrow area, must be able to maintain the high volume, and they should have the skills to move the product in a timely manner. They must be motivated to maintain the volume. Machine paced line flow is a capital intensive process. The staff must have knowledge of the entire system.
