There are three fundamental types of teams used in today's organizations: functional, cross-functional, and self-directed teams.

Functional teams is more traditional in nature meaning that it has a hierarchy (vertical) with a supervisor and his/her subordinated using the formal chain of command. This may also be referred to as a vertical team or command team. Furthermore, a functional team may include more levels of hierarchy such as a department head or supervisor. Typically a functional team makes up a single department within an organization. For example, an organization may have several various departments set up (production, financial, sales, human resources). In addition, functional teams are successful when they are grouped by activity, leader centered, and vertical or command team (Daft, 2008).
