This paper will discuss irradiation as it is used in the food industry. It is one type of advancement in production technology. The following will discuss how it is used, why it is used, and when it became a used production method. It will also discuss which organizations are using this production technology and what benefits are reaped from its use.
Irradiation is the "exposure or subjection to the action of radiation for diagnostic or therapeutic purpose (The American Heritage® Stedman's Medical Dictionary, 2002)." Irradiation is primarily used in the food industry.
How It Is Used
Irradiation is used in the food industry to eliminate food-borne pathogens and control spoilage. It kills bacteria. What happens in the process is the food passes through a radiation beam in a chamber on a conveyor belt. "The speed of the conveyor belt is what controls the dose of the radiation. The food irradiation process uses three types of ionizing radiation sources: cobalt-60 gamma sources, electron beam generators, and x-ray accelerators (U.S. Environmental Agency, 2011)." Each of these three types emits radiation differently.
