Corazon "Cory" Aquino, wife of former Senator Benigno Aquino and who was also the former Filipino President who headed the revolt against the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, is one of the famous leaders of history.

The Philippines was headed under a cruel and repressive 20-year regime by former President Ferdinand Marcos. Cory's "people power" uprising in 1986 has ended the dictatorship. Her becoming a President after that "Edsa Revolution/People Power" has also inspired other non-violent protests including that which caused the end of the Communist rule in Eastern Europe.

Cory's unlikely rise must have been in 1983 when her husband, Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. was assassinated. Ninoy was the leader of the opposition and would have become the next President if he had the chance. He was exiled in the U.S. for three years by Marcos and during those times, Cory became his instrument to communicate to the outside world, smuggling messages and raising funds for the strength of the opposition.
