1. There is a relationship between diversity and team conflict; however the type of diversity can have a different impact on the type of conflict. According to Kankanhalli, Tan, & Wei (2006), team diversity has two important categories of cultural and functional diversity. The study revealed that cultural diversity resulted in the most cited episodes of global team conflict. Cultural diversity encompasses ideals that are transferred through different languages and styles of communication, as well as other regional differences (Kankanhalli, Tan, & Wei, 2006). Therefore, these messages can be easily misrepresented. The study revealed relationship conflicts to be the most common. These conflicts are relative to feelings of discrimination against nationalities (Kankanhalli, Tan, & Wei, 2006). Functional diversity includes those individuals with a different value system; they might have different experiences which shape their overall assumptions and beliefs (Kankanhalli, Tan, & Wei, 2006). The results of the study show this type of diversity causes more task conflict.
