Defend your theory with examples taken from your readings. You might give an example where you witnessed a manager focus on the people in the organization rather than on the problems at hand, or you might have seen a leader resist change rather than embrace it. Leadership may be defined in terms of their relative function that is it helps coordinate a large number of people, it helps to organize them so that they are focused on a common objective and play an important function in planning the activities of the 'followers'. From another perspective the functions of leadership are to inspire, motivate and control the followers.
The components of leadership are taking initiative, developing, upholding and communicating common values and beliefs, achieving success for the group that is led, discovering the personal strengths and skills of the individuals and harnessing these, and satisfying the needs of the followers.
I have been led by others. I have been led during a football match. The leader was the team captain and I was the goalkeeper.
I have also been a leader. I was the elected president of my social service group. The group consisted of forty two members and was actively involved in reducing environmental pollution in the state of Minnesota.
My experience as a follower was bitter. I was blamed for the losses of the team (I should have stopped all the goals), but I was never appreciated for the matches my team won. (The goals were scored by the forwards).
My experience as a leader was positive. I was able to start and complete two new projects that had far reaching impact on the environment where the group operated. I was successful to have steered my group, provide strategies for improvement, mobilized resources for my group and brought about change.
