After reading about the IPO and understanding the company's position in insurance in worldwide markets, I believe I understand why the company organized an IPO. Many insurance companies were mutual companies which meant that their policy holders were actually the owners of the company. As insurance companies expanded both their product lines and their entrance into foreign markets, the ability to make decisions with policy holders coupled with the inability to raise capital could have hampered aggressive expansion efforts.
