Your organization is thinking about doing a business research project. Your supervisor has asked you to send him/her a memo evaluating the following summary of a business research project for an agricultural firm. The memo should address the following issues:

What types of research method types were used (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed)? Why do you think these methods were used?
How well did these methods insure the effectiveness and efficiency of the organizational structure, and the selection and maintenance of managerial personnel?

Juicy Red Tomatoes, a tomato grower operating in Florida, invited researchers to investigate (1) the effectiveness and efficiency of its organizational structure, and (2) the selection and maintenance of managerial personnel.

The researchers used observation, interviews, and questionnaires to gather data on the organizational structure of the entity. The analysis and interpretation of the primary data indicated that the organization structure was dysfunctional due to improper delegation of authority and responsibility and poor communication practices. The proposal for the correction of these discrepancies was accepted and intensive training began for the management and employees of the organization.

For the selection and maintenance of the managerial personnel, observations (primary data) and the detailed examination of records (secondary data) were employed. It was found that the selection of managerial personnel in the past was based on friendship, family connections, and political reasons; in most cases, the managerial personnel were not qualified to perform effectively and efficiently. This situation was corrected by terminating these practices and subjecting the management to intensive commensurate training and development.

Finally, the maintenance of the managerial personnel was analyzed and evaluated by examining compensation records. It was detected that there were no scientifically established compensation criteria, thus creating substantial inequity between production and compensation. The creation of a viable wage and salary administration infrastructure corrected such discrepancy.

This is a group of four questions relating to human resource development, research, demographics and market research.

There are some assumptions, which the question makes first; the question wants you to decide if you should add a product line or service to your business. This question wants you to decide without disclosing to you in what business you currently are, your special strengths and your resources.

Second the question never mentions what organization structure is in place but want you to investigate it and recommend future action. It is necessary to know whether there is a mechanistic organization or an organic one. Is this is a centralized organization or a flat one.

Thirdly, the question presupposes that juxtaposing census data with that of the area covered by one zip code would give us a good idea about the area. This is not substantiated by evidence, for example, if the question is considering education, a university program does not merely meet the needs of the local population but also from those outside the area. There are other factors which go into university popularity like the locality, the climate and the accessibility. Fourth, the question presumes that on the basis of secondary data a business can decide about the stores to be located in an area and the program to be covered by a university. This is not supported by evidence. Primary data is needed. For example in case of university courses if there is another university offering an MBA course then the decision on the basis of secondary data is wrong. Also in case of a mall if there is another luxury mall in the vicinity the new mall will be out competed. Also there is a need to study the needs of the people of the locality.

1. The question mentions 'observation, interviews and questionnaire to gather data. If the questionnaires included scales like the Likert like scale then quantitative analyses could have been done. The primary data would quantitatively be analyzed. This would be a combination of means, standard deviation and a correlation coefficient matrix.
2. This apart there must have been observation of the reporting relationships in the organization, examination of records, qualification of the personnel, the recruitment procedures and the systems for performance evaluation must have been carried out.
