Occupational health and safety issues have evolved just as our industries have evolved. The workplace has changed, which has lead to significant changes in the risks associated with performing the work. In the 1990's as the workers' compensation insurance industry began to see significant losses and employers started to feel the burden of those losses through increasing cost of premiums, there was a new focus on prevention of illness and injury as it related to the workplace.

One of the most pervasive types of injuries that have evolved from the changes in the workplace are repetitive motion injuries. Repetitive motion injuries occur from the repetitive actions of a person's daily routine, which over time cause stress on a joint, tendon or ligament. Commons diagnoses for repetitive motion type of injuries are carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, tendonitis, epicondylitis, ganglion cyst, tenosynovitis, and trigger finger. The implications of dealing with these injuries are significant. The cost of treatment is a burden to employers, and the time that it takes to heal some of these inflammatory types of injuries is also significant. This leads to loss of productivity, and increased risk exposure through the workers' compensation system.
