Rollin King and Herb Kelleher founded southwest Airlines (SA) over 38 years ago. Their goals were to create an original airline that focused more on the customer than the corporate initiative (increased profit margins). The founders discovered that satisfying the customer would, over time, pay for itself. The question they proposed, "what services should we provide that will encourage repetitive business?" The founders of SA discovered that their consumers require reliability, promptness, cost-effectiveness, and they would rather have a "good time" traveling.

SA developed a mission statement that remains in effects since January 1988, which is surprising because a mission statement should be updated to fulfill the needs of the current consumer instead of the consumers of yesteryear. SA's mission statement is geared toward its customers and its employees. SA's mission statement is to provide the highest quality of customer service. They want their customers to feel a unique measure of friendliness, warmth, pride, and competence. SA places emphasis on the essence of company pride and how members of the company should reflect the corporate vision of ensuring customers are satisfied.
