Selecting the most appropriate collaboration resources for teamwork is a pivotal decision for teams and management. Some of the key considerations are

- time
- place
- richness
- task (such as brainstorming, maintaining records, planning, scheduling, tracking progress, presentations and online meetings, etc.)
- adoption (willingness of members to use the technology)

In the article that follows, seven collaboration technologies are reviewed. Read this article, and then write a response that addresses the following two issues:

1. Explain why the considerations of time, place, richness, task, and adoption are important in selecting an appropriate collaboration tool.

2. Give at least one example of a technology which is AND is not appropriate for each condition. For example, in considering task, consider what types of tools are appropriate/inappropriate for different types of team tasks and why.

If the collaboration is to be formed in real time then those collaboration tools that can be used in real time are appropriate. For instance, instant messaging and web conferencing can be used to 'meet' in real time and collaborate meaningfully. Similarly, in case of place, the appropriateness of collaboration tool is different. For instance, if each individual is located in a different location and there needs to be a collaboration on one project. a tool like desktop sharing can be used. On the other hand if each individual is located in the same office a simple meeting may be sufficient to collaborate. The richness also determines the extent of collaboration. If simple talking or verbal discussion is enough for collaboration then web conferencing, instant messaging, or even discussion forums are adequate but where the richness of collaboration is high, where technical ...
