Question 1
What is the importance of the constitution of a national union? How does it dictate the internal government and procedures of the union?

The constitution of a national union is important because it sets out the guiding principles of the group, as outlined by the national organization. A constitution offers the framework for regional and local union operations so that all parts of the union work together and operate in the same manner. It is this document that guides and directs local organizations in regards to their activities. A constitution for any organization typically carries the basic information for how the organization will function. A well -written constitution helps an organization grow, develop and continue. It works to reduce internal conflict by outlining the rights of members and describing how business will be conducted. It is important to note that the constitution of a national union also gives the union's vision and fundamental purpose. The constitution of a national union supplies answers to questions for members. The constitution dictates the internal government and procedures of the union by putting the policies of the union in writing. The constitution is reviewed and amended as determined by members and their delegates, typically through majority vote. The constitution defines "the powers of officers" and "establishes appeal procedures" (UAW, 2013). Constitutions are typically written in a broad manner, with the future in mind, so that the organization is able to grow and develop.
