Job satisfaction refers to the extent to which a person is happy with his job. This is important because jobs that are not adequately fulfilling lead to employee stress. This is not desirable in the current employment environment. Lack of job satisfaction leads to low motivation, low productivity and high employee turnover rates. Job Satisfaction is relevant to business because job satisfaction leads to higher levels of productivity, more focused employees and achievement of organizational goals.
Job satisfaction is relevant to the HR function. If there is low job satisfaction, it indicates an underlying malaise. There might be a perennial conflict among workers or between workers and supervisors. An important cause of low job satisfaction is an unfair or low pay. Each of these conditions may lead to excellent employees leaving the company. Low satisfaction can be triggered by low prospects for personal development and career growth.
