Many artists didn't choose sides. They simply opposed the violence on all sides, which ultimately has to be the only reasonable stance. Thus you can find the artistic community rebuking both the US and the USSR for its activities throughout the 50s and 60s; of course, the US was upset because it felt it had the moral high ground even though to someone standing back from the action, it was sometimes hard to tell the difference.
