1. As you read about Whole Foods and their specific strategies what struck you as positives and/or negatives. Are there certain strategic elements that were particularly insightful about what Whole Foods does? Are there any glaring weaknesses that could jeopardize their success?
2. The formulation of strategy must take into consideration the dynamics of the industry and its competitors. Whole Foods has two main competitors, Fresh Market and Trader Joe's and others as well, as identified in the case. How has Whole Food's strategy been influenced by these competitors?
What struck me as positive about Whole Foods and their specific strategies, is the fact that Whole Foods uses an integrated and interconnected approach to the development of their strategies, as well as the rational implementation of its strategic initiatives into active components of their marketing and sales campaign. The disciplined and step-by-step approach that Whole Foods takes to the implementation of their strategies, are one of the hallmarks of this organization that makes it a formidable player in the food industry. This organization's leadership appears to conduct a detailed analysis of the situation and or environment in which their industry is participating in, in order to gain keen insight into the plethora of factors that can affect the probability of the success of the strategies that the organization intends to employ.
During the analysis of the market situation, this organization carefully analyzes its competitors, their strengths and weaknesses, and carefully compares those strengths and weaknesses with the strengths and weaknesses of Whole Foods, in order to gauge the effect that the strategic initiatives will have on the overall market, and the probability of the success of these initiatives in increasing the profitability of the organization.
