Ethics has to do with the choices that one makes to decide what is right or wrong in their lives. Most definitions of ethics define the rules of conduct in a set of human activities or within a culture.
Ethical egoism is one of several philosophical theories, and is defined in one encyclopedia as "the theory that one's self is, or should be the motivation and goal of one's own action." This definition, from the University of Tennessee at Martin, also mentions that altruism is the opposite, or antonym, of egoism. This description can provide a clearer understanding of the theory, because altruism has to do with actions that come from putting oneself in another one's place.
