Voice quality is important because a voice that has a pleasant tone and is paced at a tempo that makes it easy to understand and comprehend makes the listener more apt to be interested in the message the speaker is conveying. A nasal, guttural voice is grating and can turn the listener off, even in informal conversation. The style and word choices one makes impact the message of the speaker, even if it is simply to ask directions or inquire about another's interest.
