The thoracic cage is made up of bone and cartilage. It surrounds the thoracic cavity and supports the shoulder girdle and upper limbs.

It is made up of 12 pairs of ribs, the sternum, associated costal cartilages, and the bodies of the 12 thoracic vertebrae. It is narrower at its superior end and broader at its inferior end. It is flattened from anterior to posterior.

It provides attachment points for the muscles of the neck, thorax, upper abdomen, and back.

It protects the organs of the thoracic cavity and upper abdominal cavity.
